AI Dungeon is one of the original consumer AI applications: a text adventure game powered by large language models that generates story responses in real time. Launched in 2019 by Latitude, AI Dungeon lets you type what your character does, and the AI writes what happens next — indefinitely, in any direction the story takes.

## How It Works

**Open-ended narrative** — Unlike traditional text adventures with fixed branching trees, AI Dungeon generates each response dynamically. There are no dead ends, no "you can't do that" messages. If you want to attempt something, the story accommodates it.

**Multiple genres and settings** — Choose from fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, apocalypse, cyberpunk, or custom settings. You can also import any setting you describe. Play as a wizard, a detective, a spaceship captain, or a customer service rep — the AI adapts.

**Do Anything mode** — Bypass genre constraints. In this mode, you're only limited by the model's capabilities; the AI will attempt to write any scenario you propose.

**Adventures and scenarios** — Pre-built adventure templates give you a starting scenario and world context. Community-built scenarios cover an enormous range of themes.

**Memory system** — AI Dungeon maintains a summary of past story events so the AI remembers character names, locations, and plot points across long sessions.
