Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence is Apple's personal AI system, now running on iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26 (Apple shifted to year-based OS version numbers in fall 2025; the current point release as of mid-2026 is 26.4). It brings generative AI capabilities across Apple devices through a combination of on-device models and Private Cloud Compute for more complex requests. Features include Siri's existing ChatGPT hand-off for general knowledge queries, Writing Tools for summarizing, proofreading, and rewriting text across any app, Image Playground for generating images, Genmoji for creating custom emoji, Visual Intelligence for camera-based lookups, and Smart Reply suggestions in Mail and Messages. The much-promised deeper, more personalized/context-aware Siri overhaul — originally slated for iOS 18, then targeted for the iOS 26.4 update in spring 2026 — has slipped again and, as of August 2026, still has not shipped; Apple has said it remains on track for later in 2026. Separately, Apple's ChatGPT integration is transitioning from GPT-4o to GPT-5, with the upgrade expected to roll out in August 2026, and OpenAI recently added a companion ChatGPT-in-Messages integration on Mac. Apple emphasizes on-device processing for privacy, with cloud requests handled in a privacy-preserving compute environment. Apple Intelligence is free for compatible devices: iPhone 15 Pro and later, iPad with M-series chips, and Macs with M-series chips.
