ChatGPT Atlas

ChatGPT Atlas was OpenAI's dedicated web browser, launched October 21, 2025 as a macOS-only app built around ChatGPT as a persistent sidebar and agentic browsing layer.

Discontinued August 9, 2026

OpenAI announced on July 9, 2026 that it was discontinuing Atlas as a standalone browser, switching it off on August 9, 2026 — 292 days after launch. Rather than keep a separate browser alive, OpenAI folded its browser-based agentic capabilities into two existing surfaces:

• ChatGPT desktop app — gained an upgraded browser mode with multi-tab support, file downloads, improved navigation, and account login handling.
• A ChatGPT extension for Google Chrome — brings the same in-page assistant and agentic actions to a user's existing browser instead of a dedicated one.

Codex also picked up related agentic-browsing capability. Atlas never shipped on Windows, iOS, or Android despite those being promised at launch, which limited its addressable audience to macOS users for its entire life.

What to use instead

The functionality Atlas offered (in-page ChatGPT sidebar, agentic form-filling and task completion) is now available directly inside the ChatGPT desktop app or via the ChatGPT Chrome extension — see openai.com/chatgpt.

Positioning (historical)

Atlas competed in the same "AI-native browser" category as Perplexity Comet, Dia, and Opera Neon before its shutdown.
