Windsurf (now Devin Desktop)

Windsurf was an AI-native code editor and companion to Codeium's autocomplete extension. In 2025, Cognition (the company behind the autonomous coding agent Devin) acquired Windsurf for roughly $250 million after an earlier OpenAI acquisition attempt fell through. On June 2, 2026, Cognition folded Windsurf into its own product line, renaming it Devin Desktop — the same editor and features, delivered as an over-the-air update, with settings and extensions carried over automatically. The standalone "Codeium" brand no longer exists as a separate product.

What Devin Desktop Does

Devin Desktop provides IDE-integrated autocomplete and chat (the legacy Codeium capability) alongside an autonomous local coding agent, Devin Local — a from-scratch Rust rewrite of the former "Cascade" agent that is roughly 30% more token-efficient and can spawn subagents for parallel work. The app now opens to an Agent Command Center, a Kanban-style board for managing local and cloud agents (Devin Local, Devin Cloud, Devin CLI, Devin Review) from one place. It supports the open Agent Client Protocol (ACP), letting users run Claude Agent, Codex, Gemini CLI, OpenCode, or Junie as agents inside the same editor.

Who Uses It

Devin Desktop is used by developers who want an autonomous agent to handle multi-step implementation — writing files, running tests, fixing errors — while they focus on architecture and review. Former Codeium users still get free tab-completions and inline edits; those who want the autonomous agent experience upgrade to a paid plan.

Strengths

Free tab-completions and inline edits remain unlimited with no usage caps, unchanged from the Codeium era. Devin Local is competitive with Cursor's Agent mode for autonomous, sustained multi-file development. The unified Agent Command Center gives visibility across local and cloud agent work.

Limitations

Devin Desktop is a full IDE, so adopting it still means switching from your current editor. Pricing has shifted multiple times through 2026 as Cognition integrated the product, and the historical "Codeium"/"Windsurf" branding is gone, which can confuse users looking for the old product names. Cascade-based workflows and documentation are now deprecated (Cascade reached end-of-life July 1, 2026).

Alternatives

GitHub Copilot remains the market leader for plugin-based IDE integration. Cursor is the closest competitor for an AI-native editor experience. Aider provides a terminal-based, git-native alternative for developers who want to avoid a full IDE switch.
