About
NVIDIA Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE) is NVIDIA's suite of AI technologies for creating digital humans and intelligent NPCs in games. It combines NVIDIA's speech AI, facial animation, and large language models to create real-time responsive characters — including the famous Project DIGITS demo NPC.
In-Depth Review
NVIDIA Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE) is NVIDIA's answer to the AI character problem: how do you make game NPCs that look, sound, and respond like real people in real time?
ACE is a collection of AI technologies that work together to create complete digital human experiences:
## Components of NVIDIA ACE
**NVIDIA NIM microservices** (the AI brains): LLMs tuned for character dialogue, knowledge grounding, and narrative coherence. Characters stay in-role, remember context, and deliver responses that fit their personality.
**NVIDIA Audio2Face**: Drives realistic facial animation from audio — lip sync, eye movement, micro-expressions — in real time. A character doesn't just play an animation when it speaks; its entire face responds to the speech AI-generated for that moment.
**NVIDIA Riva**: Enterprise speech AI for automatic speech recognition and text-to-speech. Players can speak to characters and characters respond in their own voice.
**NVIDIA Nemotron LLM**: NVIDIA's own language model, fine-tuned for game character use cases, designed to run efficiently on NVIDIA hardware.
## The "Journey to Valhalla" Demo
NVIDIA showed ACE in action with a tech demo featuring Jin, an NPC ramen shop owner in a cyberpunk city. Players could have unscripted conversations with Jin — asking about the neighborhood, the menu, the city's factions — and Jin responded naturally, maintained context across the conversation, and reacted with realistic facial animation. It was a landmark demo for the industry.
## Integration
ACE integrates with Unreal Engine and Unity. It runs on NVIDIA hardware and via cloud APIs, allowing developers to choose between on-device AI (for low-latency, offline play) and cloud inference (for highest quality).
## Current Status
ACE is in early access for game developers. NVIDIA is working with major studios to integrate ACE characters into upcoming titles. It represents the leading edge of what's possible for game AI character technology.
