SillyTavern

SillyTavern is what serious AI roleplay enthusiasts use. It's not a product — it's an interface layer that connects to whatever AI model you prefer (Claude, GPT-4, Llama running locally, Mistral via API, or dozens more) and provides a purpose-built environment for character roleplay, collaborative fiction, and interactive storytelling.

What SillyTavern Provides

SillyTavern adds a rich layer on top of raw LLM capabilities:

• Character cards: persistent characters with appearance, personality, backstory, scenario setup, and example dialogue — all injected into the AI's context
• World Info / Lorebooks: define facts about your world (people, places, events) that automatically inject when relevant keywords appear in conversation
• Persona management: define your own character for the AI to "know about"
• Author's Note: inject instructions mid-story to guide narrative direction
• Regex scripting: automated text transformations for formatting or content control
• Chat branching: explore alternate paths from any point in a story

Model Backends

As of v1.18.0 (May 2026), SillyTavern connects to:

• Cloud APIs: OpenAI (current GPT-5.x family), Anthropic (Claude), Google (Gemini), Cohere, OpenRouter, MiniMax, and Cloudflare Workers AI (added v1.18.0)
• Local models via: Ollama, LM Studio, KoboldAI, TabbyAPI, llama.cpp, Oobabooga — with support for current-generation open models (DeepSeek V4, Gemma 4)
• Specialized services: NovelAI, AI Horde (crowdsourced free inference)

This flexibility means you can use the best model for each use case — a powerful cloud model for complex narrative, a local model for privacy-sensitive content.

Community Ecosystem

SillyTavern has a large community creating and sharing character cards, lorebooks, and preset configurations on platforms like Chub.ai and GitHub. Thousands of pre-made characters are freely available.

Setup

SillyTavern runs as a Node.js local server. Installation requires basic command-line comfort (git clone, npm install). Not a plug-and-play tool — some technical setup is required. The payoff is complete control and no per-message fees if using local models.
