Adobe Firefly is Adobe's family of generative AI models built specifically for commercial creative work. Unlike AI image generators trained on scraped internet images, Firefly was trained exclusively on licensed Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content, and public domain material — making it one of the few AI creative tools that Adobe explicitly supports for commercial use without intellectual property concerns.

Firefly is available as a standalone web application at firefly.adobe.com, where anyone with an Adobe account can generate images from text prompts, create text effects, and produce vector graphics. It is also deeply integrated into Creative Cloud applications including Photoshop (Generative Fill, Generative Expand), Illustrator (Generative Recolor, Text to Vector), Adobe Express, and Premiere Pro (Generative Extend for video). This integration into professional tools is Firefly's most significant differentiator — you can use AI generation directly inside the workflow where you're already working.

The most widely used Firefly capability is Generative Fill in Photoshop, which lets users select a region of an image and describe what should appear there. The results are contextually aware — lighting, perspective, and style match the surrounding image — making it a practical tool for removing objects, extending backgrounds, and adding new elements to photographs. Generative Expand extends the canvas of an image in any direction. Text Effects generates stylized letterforms based on natural language descriptions.

Pricing is credit-based. The free Firefly plan includes 25 generative credits per month. Adobe Creative Cloud subscribers at most plan levels receive a monthly credit allocation, typically 500 to 1,000 credits depending on plan. Individual Firefly plans start at 4.99 dollars per month for 100 credits. Credits are consumed per generation, with higher-quality outputs costing more.

Limitations include the credit system, which can be a friction point for heavy users. The image quality is generally strong but lags behind Midjourney for artistic and stylized outputs — Firefly excels at realistic, commercially appropriate imagery rather than experimental aesthetics. Video generation capabilities are still maturing compared to dedicated video AI tools.
